Cherry says he wishes he had used different words; was willing to apologize

12 novembre 2019
In a new interview with City TV, which you can view in its entirety below, the former star of Coach's Corner says he never meant to single anyone out and wishes he had used different words in his November 9th rant on immigrants and poppies.

Well, I meant everybody. But I said the wrong thing. When you have seven minutes to go, and you have to go, and you have to go, when you say everyone I meant everyone. Everybody. That's what I meant," Cherry told the reporter when asked to explain his "you people" comments.

He also said he thought Ron MacLean would come back and say something to him on the air, but that never happened. He also insists no one had said a thing to him about his comments before he left the studio that night. He says it wasn't until the next day that someone from Sportsnet talked to him about it.

"If that's the way people want to take it, there's nothing I can do about it," Cherry added.

When asked if he wished he had used different words, Cherry replied yes immediately, and said he wishes he had said everybody.

"I didn't use it. You can't go back...I did it, and I'm paying the price."

Cherry, 85, singled out new immigrants in Toronto and Mississauga, Ontario where he lives, for not honouring Canada’s veterans and dead soldiers.

“You people love … you people that come here, whatever it is, you love our way of life, you love our milk and honey. At least you could pay a couple of bucks for a poppy or something like that," Cherry said that night. His words caused a flurry of backlash and complaints. Sportsnet, the NHL and co-host Ron MacLean all apologized and rebuked Cherry's comments. On Monday, it was revealed that Cherry and Sportsnet had parted ways.

Cherry insists in the interview with City TV that he told Sportsnet he would apologize, but "it wasn't enough."
