Avs sound off on referees letting play continue as Matt Calvert lies on the ice with head injury

17 novembre 2019
The Colorado Avalanche beat the Vancouver Canucks on Nathan MacKinnon's OT goal, but the game was marred by yet another injury to the depleted Avs and a controversy involving the officiating crew.

Down 4-2, the Canucks pulled their goalie for an extra attacker and scored, but only after Matt Calvert took a puck to the head while awkwardly trying to block an Elias Pettersson shot. Calvert lay on the ice, bleeding from his head, as the refs allowed the play to continue. While the ref did have discretion to stop a play, even with the Canucks holding possession, Avalanche players and other were disguested that they chose not to.

The rulebook reads as follows: ""When a player is injured so that he cannot continue play or go to his bench, the play shall not be stopped until the injured player's team has secured possession of the puck. If the player's team is in possession of the puck at the time of injury, play shall be stopped immediately unless his team is in a scoring position. In the case where it is obvious that a player has sustained a serious injury, the Referee and/or Linesman may stop the play immediately."

The Canucks proceeded to score again in the waning moments of the game, and then MacKinnon sent the crowd home with his OT goal. But he had plenty to say after the game. "A guy laying there, bleeding out the side of his head," a flustered MacKinnon said, "I can only imagine if that was LeBron James with his head bleeding and they let the other team take a three-pointer to tie the game." MacKinnon seemed to place more of an emphasis on the rule, rather than the referees' judgment,

Coach Jared Bednar, who is tired of seeing his players mowed down by the injury bug, was critical of the decision.

Speaking to Ryan S. Clark of the Athletic, Avs defenseman Eric Johnson was far more vocal.

This is a rule that might need to be tinkered with in the off-season.
