Matthews, Tavares, Babcock talk about Leafs recent struggles

18 novembre 2019
Not much seems to be going right for the Toronto Maple Leafs so far this season. The team that many analysts felt would be a Cup contender back in September has a record of 9-9-4, and sits fifth in the Atlantic division. Although it is still early, alternate captain Auston Matthews says he and his teammates are struggling with confidence.

"It’s tough to get worse from here. It’s frustrating." said Matthews. In the locker room, confidence isn’t exactly high right now. We have nobody to blame but ourselves. It’s really up to us."

"We can’t just say ‘oh it’s just one game’ or ‘we’ll get it next time.’ It’s repetitive, and for us, we want to make sure it stops now and we want to get back on track," Matthews added.

As for captain John Tavares, he says he doesn't expect anyone to take pity on the team.

"No one is going to feel sorry for us," Tavares sais. It’s really on us in here to continue to work and figure out what we need to do to. It’s looking yourself in the mirror and making sure you’re giving everything you’ve got every day."

Head coach Mike Babcock, who many analysts believe is on the hot seat due to the team's play, says his players need to play harder.

"We need a re-group because that’s not good enough. We didn’t play hard enough for long enough. As an athlete, you put on your sweater, you want to be proud of how hard you compete and how hard you play for each other. We didn’t look after that.," said Babcock.

TSN anlayst Craig Button has pointed out that Toronto's record since last Christmas is 30-27-10, which he says is "simply not good enough" and falls directly at the feet of Babcock and the system he is trying to get his players to play.
