Garnet Hathaway says spitting on Erik Gudbranson was the wrong move

19 novembre 2019
Things definitely got heated Monday night as the Washington Capitals took on the Anaheim Ducks. However, Washington's Garnet Hathaway admits he may have taken things too far when he ended up spitting on Erik Gudbranson of the Ducks while the two were involved in a shoving match late in the 2nd period.

"I reacted a little emotionally, unfortunately spit came out of my mouth," Hathaway told reporters after the game. "There's no place [for that]. Emotional play by me, you don't plan any of that stuff in your head. It was a quick reaction and unfortunately, the wrong one for me."

"The refs were trying to break it up and I felt like there were a couple sucker punches thrown and I got one there quick," said Hathaway. "I reacted a little emotionally and unfortunately spit came out of my mouth after I got sucker punched and it went onto him."

Hathaway could be facing discipline from the league for his actions. He received a match penalty on the incident which, according to Samantha Pell of the Washington Post, triggers an automatic Department of Player Safety or the NHL’s Hockey Operations Department review. The act of spitting can result in a suspension, with players have being disciplined for such action in the past. Something like his is normally handled by Hockey Operations and not DoPS.

The Capitals would go on to win the game 5-2. You can view the entire incident below.

Should Hathaway be suspended for spitting?
