Projected first overall pick Alexis Lafreniere fined for abuse of officials

Alexis Lafreniere, who is widely projected to be the first overall pick in the next NHL entry draft, has been fined $1000 by the QMJHL for his actions during a game Sunday night. Lafreniere's Rimouski Oceanic were taking on the Shawinigan Cataractes when a brawl broke out late in the 2nd period. After things had calmed down, Lafreniere had been given a two minute penalty for cross checking and had been ejected from the game for abuse of an official.

Wednesday, the QMJHL announced that Lafreniere had been fined $500 for abuse of an official and another $500 for inappropriate language to an opponent. While the league has not made it clear exactly what happened, it is believed that something Lafreniere said to the referee led to the abuse fine. The team will be paying the fines on his behalf.

Lafrenière wasn’t the only player to receive supplemental discipline after the game. His teammate, Frédéryck Janvier, as well as the Cataractes’ Mikael Robidoux and Leon Denny, were all suspended.

Lafreniere, 18, has been on an absolute tear with the Oceanic this season. He has a league-leading 51 points (15 goals, 36 assists) in 23 games.
